If you spent any time online in the last year or two, you’ve probably witnessed the explosive popularity of AI chatbots like ChatGPT. It was the moment artificial intelligence finally stepped from laboratories into everyday life in a very public way. Suddenly, AI was something everyone could interact with, not just read or speculate about. But what about robotics? When will robots have their own “Open AI moment”—a tipping point where they become the topic everyone can’t stop talking about and what technology development do you think will cause that shift?

Robotics could experience its own "OpenAI moment" when robots can autonomously perform useful tasks in everyday settings, such as assisting in homes, working in warehouses, or supporting healthcare. For this to happen, these robots also need to be affordable enough for widespread public use. Currently, advancements are promising but primarily focused on industrial or experimental applications. A significant breakthrough in areas like dexterous manipulation, dependable autonomy, or affordable humanoid robots could bring robotics into the mainstream spotlight, similar to how ChatGPT did for artificial intelligence.
