If you were a teacher, would you permit your students to complete their homework using AI?

Almost all of my college instructors forbade us from using artificial intelligence (AI) for any purpose, particularly when they assigned a project and stated that using information derived from AI is forbidden.

Would you follow the same course of action if you were a teacher?

I was not lucky to have the chance to use AI during my college days because it wasn't prevalent. When I was teaching in school too, I was personally using AI to help me form notes. There is no reason I wouldn't allow my students to use AI.

The world is now in the era of technology dependency. It's going to be very difficult to stop studying with AI programs now which is why I know students won't be stopped from using it. There may be instructions on how they can use AI programs for completing their assignments to ensure they make their own contribution to the assignment.

That's just it. Don't eliminate AI usage but don't encourage AI dependence. The use of AI would make your work as a teacher even easier. The overuse if AI would lead to a total reduction in critical thinking. I would encourage my students to use AI but not to be dependent on AI.

I do not think there should be any issues with that because if someone is getting knowledge or more resources for completing the task in much better way then it is good. But it must be monitored that students should not depend on that completely.

Students will have access to AI their entire lives. They will have access to it in the workforce. As far as school is a way to prepare students for their future lives, then YES it should. That being said, there are some skills they need to learn to do themselves. For example, some critical thinking and critical reading skills are still necessary even though AI will do most of that for you.

As a teacher, I would be very cautious about permitting students to use AI to complete their homework for a few key reasons:

  • Education and learning: The purpose of homework is for students to practice and demonstrate their own understanding of concepts being taught. Allowing AI completion undermines the educational value and defeats the learning process.
  • Development of skills: Subjects like mathematics, sciences and writing are meant to help students develop critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills. Relying on AI does not foster development of these skills.
  • Assessment of learning: If I cannot be sure a student's own understanding and abilities produced the homework, I cannot accurately assess what they have learned from my instruction. AI completion interferes with assessment.
  • Academic integrity: Most schools have honor codes prohibiting cheating or plagiarism. Allowing AI homework risks compromising academic integrity and promotes dishonest academic practices.
  • Dependence on technology: An over-reliance on AI to do work for students could foster weakness if/when technology is unavailable or if skills still need to be applied without assistance.
That said, I may consider limited or supervised uses of AI for things like spell/grammar checks, research assistance or concept explanation - as long as the student still does the critical thinking, problem-solving and demonstration of understanding on their own. The educational value and assessment of learning must remain priorities over convenience. Overall honesty and skills development would need to be protected.

Frankly, I wouldn't have them do any work with AI. It's just cheating. Also, students need to learn to do things without assistance. They are too much babies!

I think so. If I were a teacher, I could demonstrate to students the responsible use of AI in situations such as preparing for interviews, writing resumes and cover letters.
