Traditional IVR (Interactive Voice Response) systems have been the standard for business phone handling for decades. "Press 1 for sales, press 2 for support..." — we all know the experience.
With recent advances in real-time voice AI (GPT Realtime, Gemini Live, Grok Voice), we're finally seeing AI voice agents that can:
- Understand natural speech without rigid menu trees
- Route customers based on what they actually say (not which button they press)
- Transfer between specialists while preserving full context
- Handle multiple languages natively
The question is: are these AI agents actually good enough to replace IVR now, or is this still early?
From what I've seen, the technology is impressive in demos, but I wonder about:
- Real-world accuracy rates on messy, accented, or fast speech
- Handling edge cases that IVR handles predictably (even if frustratingly)
- Cost comparison — is an AI agent cheaper than maintaining an IVR system?
- What happens during peak load — can AI agents scale as well as IVR?
Would love to hear from anyone who has actually replaced or supplemented IVR with AI voice agents in a production setting.
