With the advent of deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation, are we heading towards a future where distinguishing truth from falsehood becomes impossible?

How would society cope with a complete erosion of trust in information?

Yes, absolutely. Fake news is going to take over and we aren't going to be able to tell what's real and what's fake.

Video and related media are going to become the worst.

I find deepfake technology inherently dangerous. This technology can manipulate information easily, it will create confusion in society. The society is not prepared to cope with deepfake. More than the general public, newsmakers, celebrities, and politicians are at risk.

Me and my brother were discussing this topic. In fact, he was saying how could college professors trust a paper written by students and, even before AI, they couldn't trust them. Well, my brother suggested papers will have to be written in a room where people are monitoring things.
