DIY/personal LLMs and links to existing data sources

Hi

I've been playing around a bit with DIY LLMs (LLama, GPT4ALL) and am interested in learning more about these kinds of "personal" AIs but this post isn't really about them specifically. I have very little technical depth to my AI knowledge, but I am quite techy (I do a lot of work in automation at present) and a fast learner.

I work in education, and in our organisation we have a 5 year plan of having our own in house LLM that maintains privacy but that can also do things like read from our existing data sources (in house SQL or MS Fabric data) to answer questions, both from a student side (show me more good learning resources on X topic in video form / can you teach me how to properly cite sources in my essays / etc) and from a staff side (help me write a lesson plan on X topic / show me data on student attendance for students studying X classes or with X characteristics / etc)

What would people recommend for me to focus my own personal learning journey on? Is the Llama/GPT4ALL stuff something that can achieve these kinds of goals, or is there something else I'm not aware of yet that would work better for this kind of use case? I know Khan Academy have their own AI teachers that look very impressive, but I'm not even sure right now what engine they use to power that.

Not sure where to focus my attention / energy to get the best results, I'm hoping there's some folks with a deeper understanding of the space and the different options that can just get me started in the right direction. I don't need my hand held every step of the way, I just don't want to waste time and energy on something that can't do the kind of things I'll need and have to go back to square one with something else...

Thanks for any tips or hints anyone can provide.
